Rosie Vean Childs Burton, 1933-2022

Rosie Vean Childs Burton, 89, of Little Rock, died March 31, 2022. Born February 13, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Irene and Floyd Childs. She was a graduate of Warren Public School and furthered her education at Arkansas Baptist Seminary College.

After attending Arkansas Baptist, Rosie known to her friends as ‘Sue Childs’, married the love of her life, Larry Burton Sr. in 1953. To this union three children were born, Deborah Green, Denise Burton and Larry Burton Jr.

In 1957 Rosie and Larry moved to Los Angeles, California for opportunities to fulfill their dreams. They both quickly found employment. The family joined Christian Light Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.S. Pope. Rosie sang in the choir with James Cleveland, Andre Crouch, Kenneth Ulmer and became the best of friends. She later joined Greater Temple of God where she served as choir director. Rosie became a popular radio announcer on KGFJ FM radio.

Rosie and her good friend, Bertha Marsh opened Fairyland Child Care in South Central Los Angeles in 1965. She began working with battered women in 1989. She opened over seven shelters and touched hundreds of thousands of people in her lifetime.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Burton Sr.; children, Deborah Green, Denise Burton, Larry Burton Jr.; grandchildren, Carl Abraham, Melissa Eady, Brandee Burton, Whitney Daniel; niece, Jimmie Sue Wade; nephew, Carl Porter; a host of great grandchildren, friends and family.

Graveside service was April 22 at Union Cemetery in Warren with Bishop Larry Hines officiating. Arrangements by Hammons Funeral Home.
