Warren School Board approves contracts for High School repairs, + new staff hired

Members of the Warren School Board met Tuesday, June 28, 2022 in a called meeting to deal with several matters of business. Six of the seven board members were in attendance. Representatives of Metro Disaster Specialist and the School’s architect were present to update the Board on cleanup and repair activities that have been accomplished to-date relating to the high school facility damaged
by fire several months back. The Board was told of the plans to complete the cleanup, set up temporary classrooms for the fall, and more extensive plans for reconstruction and repairs to the entire facility. The Board’s architect will monitor the overall project and assured that the work complies with all codes and regulations.

According to Superintendent Bryan Cornish, there will be four separate contracts involved in getting the project completed. The contracts are as follows:

  1. $1,250,000 for the set up of temporary classrooms to be utilized in keeping school open beginning in the fall semester of 2022.
  2. $948,000 for cleanup and disposal of damaged material and items of the entire high school complex.
  3. $2,840,000 to rebuild and repair the cafeteria. This does not include the sprinkler system.
  4. $195,000 to conduct appropriate cleanup of the cafeteria to comply with codes and regulations.

All four contracts are not to exceed the contract price, and charges will be based on work accomplished.

After being briefed on all four proposed contracts, the Board voted to approve them with Metro Disaster Specialist, so work may proceed as quickly as possible.

Superintendent Cornish told the Board members that AIG, the company that had the insurance coverage on the high school building, has forwarded a payment of $5 million to allow the District to proceed with work under the contracts as required. The Board was told that demolition of the auxiliary gym, where the fire began, is scheduled to start on July 18.

Future decisions on the rebuilding of the gym will be made by the School Board. Plans are to move as quickly as possible to get the cafeteria rebuilt and back in use as other work continues.

After going into executive session, the Board returned and approved the following personnel matters:

  • Accepted the resignations of-Amy Momsen as a Brusnon instructor and Jennifer Helms as SEACBEC secretary
  • Voted to hire-April Thompson as Brunson 5th grade science instructor, Madison Zaliski as High School Physical Science Instructor and Auston Hardy as High School Girls Basketball Coach/Assistant Jr. Girls Basketball Coach/Assistant girls Sr. and Jr. Track Coach/Girls offseason Coach/High School P. E. Instructor
  • The Board also approved the hiring of Tannishon Aunta Carter Evans as a High School Algebra 2 Instructor.

In other business, the Board approved an out-of-state trip request and the transfer of up to $1,100,000 from the operating fund to the Building Fund.
