BCMC Board reviews fiscal year finances

Bradley County Medical Center board members reviewed financial figures as their fiscal year ended Sept. 30, at their monthly meeting Thursday at the Brunson Medical Complex.

Controller Matt Pace said total hospital visits were down 8 percent in September. With $3.6 million in revenues, there was a $411,000 net loss for the month. The total loss for the fiscal year was $1.6 million.

Accounts receivable decreased for the year but increased $167,000 for the month.

CEO Leslie Huitt added that acute patient days were down for the fiscal year. However, she said there were 16 patients admitted in just the past few days.

With the lack of a surgeon for the past six months, surgeries were down for the year. Overall expenses went up $1.5 million for the fiscal year.

Rural Health Clinic revenues decreased for the past fiscal year due to less chronic care and reclassification of some Women’s Clinic items.

“Where we started the year in accounts receivable and where we ended, we’re doing a lot better,” Huitt said.

Chief Nursing Officer Jamie Wolfe said Lisa Williams began work in the medical surgery unit. Some nursing positions remain open.

South Arkansas Community College had a recruitment luncheon at the hospital. Their students and the University of Arkansas at Monticello nursing students have done some clinical training at BCMC.

New beds purchased through a grant have arrived and some old beds were sold.

A Nursing Skills Fair will be held in November.

A motion was approved to spend over $25,000 for ductwork using Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program grant funds.

A total of $127,907.82 was received in county sales tax funds in September. There is a total of $3,789,185.37 available to spend from the fund.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, the next board meeting will be held on Nov. 29.
