Warren Street Department begins removal of stumps from Main Street trees

WARREN, Ark. – The Warren Street Department began removing stumps from the old trees lining Main Street Friday, March 24, 2023 using a backhoe. The stumps will be ground down once they have been removed. The trees were originally planted years ago as part of a downtown beautification effort called townscape. However, over the years some had outgrown the area in which they were planted. Others were forced to be cut because of disease or threat to buildings.

A crew of six men, led by Warren Street Department Foreman Monty Hearnsberger, was working on the project Friday afternoon. Crews had to first remove the metal grates before beginning the stump removal process. The removal is also part of the process of working to increase water flow and drainage on Main.

“We do intend on replacing them in the future,” said Warren Mayor Gregg Reep. “We plan to use a different kind of tree that maybe grows slower and is easier to maintain.” However, Mayor Reep added that the replacement tree type has not yet been decided.
