Warren deals Dumas the delta blues in 35-0 resounding win

DUMAS, Ark. – Completing their first shutout of the year, the Warren Lumberjacks picked up another solid win on the road Friday night, October 7, 2022, defeating the Dumas Bobcats by the final of 35-0 to remain undefeated in the 8-4A Conference.

The Jacks came into the ballgame with a 5-1 overall record. Their only loss to date was a tight 31-28 defeat to non-conference opponent Stuttgart in week zero. Dumas on the other hand brought an exactly opposite record into the ballgame, sitting at 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Their sole win so far this season came September 16 against Lakeside of Lake Village in a 17-13 victory.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a quick advantage in the first, and never let off the gas through the final whistle.

Warren’s opening drive went 62 yards and featured a gain of 14 from running back Treylon Jackson. It ended in the same fashion as so many Warren drives have so far in 2022. Senior quarterback Maddox Lassiter punched in the final blow of the possession, scoring from two yards out on a quarterback blast. Jose Jacinto’s extra point was good as Warren took the early 7-0 lead.

Defensively Warren gave Dumas next to nothing to hope for on the night. The Bobcats’ opening drive came to a close on third down through an interception by Lassiter, then playing on the defensive side of the ball for Warren. The Lassiter INT set Warren up with fantastic field position at the Dumas 16-yard-line with 8:19 to go in the first.

The short-field drive did come down to a fourth down play, but Lassiter fired a pass complete over the middle and into the end zone to Antonio Jordan. AJ continued his superb form from last week by making the grab for the Jacks’ second score of the night. Jacinto again knocked through the extra point to make it 14-0 Warren.

Again the Warren defense was lights out on the following Dumas possession. They were forced to punt, and Warren took over at their 30-yard-line.

Another long drive was boosted in part by a wonderful screen pass into the right flat from Lassiter to Jalin Lee. Lee scampered 30 yards for a first down. Jackson would post another big 17-yard rush a play or two later, eventually setting the Jacks up at the Bobcat 22. Lassiter went back to the screen, this time hitting Lee in the left flat. Lee did the rest, weaving his way 22 yards for the touchdown. Jacinto converted the point after to make it 21-0 Warren at the end of the first quarter.

The Jacks were quick to action again early in the second quarter. With 10:21 remaining before the half, Jackson capped off a 52-yard drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown. Jacinto tacked on the point after to make it 28-0 Warren.

Sophomore Cody Weatherspoon forced a fumble on the next Dumas possession. The multi-sport linebacker, who also picked up valuable reps at running back late-on, also recovered the very fumble he forced, setting the orange and black up with great field position once more. The Jacks would however be forced to punt with about six minutes to go in the period. It would be Warren’s lone punt of the night.

Jalin Lee and Neeyo Harding led another great defensive effort on the next Dumas drive, shutting off the edge. The Bobcats were forced to punt once again.

With 3:16 remaining in the second quarter, Landon Wolfe scored from 12 yards out off the right tackle to complete a 62-yard drive. Jacinto hammered through the extra point to put the Jacks up 35-0.

The Warren defense again held Dumas scoreless on their final possession of the first half, securing the sportsmanship rule to start at the beginning of the third quarter.

Coach Bo Hembree’s staff elected to provide some playing time to the second teams on both sides of the ball in the second half. Antonio Jordan moved to quarterback, and Matthew Powell, Zy’Kei Trotter, and Cody Weatherspoon shuffled in and shared tailback duties. Meanwhile, the defense for Warren also saw several players from the second and third slots on the depth chart get time.

With a continual clock, neither team scored in the third or fourth quarters. Warren secured their fifth win of the season by the final of 35-0 over Dumas.

The Lumberjacks put up 357 yards total offense, with 222 coming on the ground and 135 through the air.

Treylon Jackson led the Jacks on the ground with 11 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Matthew Powell got four carries at running back. The junior picked up 45 yards on the night.

Cody Weatherspoon’s total tally reached 41 yards on five touches.

Landon Wolfe had four carries for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Jordyn Ingram and Maddox Lassiter each had three carries. Ingram posted 21 yards, while Lassiter posted 17 and a touchdown.

Lassiter also went eight for 13 passing. He threw for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

His favorite two targets were Antonio Jordan and Jalin Lee. Jordan had 73 yards on five catches. Lee had 52 yards on two receptions. They each had a touchdown.

The Jacks were led defensively by Delfino Rivera with six tackles on the night. He was named the Saline River Chronicle Player of the Game.

The Lumberjacks held Dumas to just 62 yards offense on the night, most of which came in the second half with mass subs made.

Malik Day had a shut-down night at corner. The senior also made five tackles.

Tyrone Grays tallied four tackles, as did Neeyo Harding.

Cody Weatherspoon had four tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Matthew Powell was credited with a pass defended.

The Lumberjacks now sit at 5-1 overall with a 4-0 record in the 8-4A. They are atop the Conference table, followed closely by DeWitt who has played one more conference game than Warren. The two teams get set to meet next Friday night, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium in Warren for WHS’s Homecoming.
