Season underway as Lady Jacks fall to Drew Central

The Warren Lady Jack Basketball team launched their 2022/23 season Friday night, December 2, 2022 with a loss to the Drew Central Lady Pirates in the Mini State Classics Tournament hosted by Drew Central.

This year’s Lady Jack squad features several new faces and plenty of youth. Friday also marked the era of new head Lady Jack Coach La Darian Pace at the helm of the program.

Senior Michaela Stanley captained the Warren side alongside fellow starters Paris Wright, Raven Harris, Aniyah York, and Cherish Dooley.

The season opener was a tough night for the orange and black, although there were plenty of signs of promise in the weeks ahead.

On Warren’s first possession of the ballgame, Dooley raced inside and found herself in prime shooting position, but the shot wouldn’t fall. Aniyah York scored the first basket for the Lady Jacks, but with 3:26 to go in the first quarter Drew Central held a 6-2 lead. Warren tried to establish an inside presence in the opening minutes, as Raven Harris sank a shot from the paint with two minutes left in the first to cut into the Lady Pirate lead. Drew Central led 14-4 after the first.

Warren struggled a bit in possession, particularly with a tough press applied from the home team. Drew Central opened a big lead by the halftime break at 43-4.

Tessa Andrus hit a three in the third. Wright and York each found a bucket in the same period.

Dooley had a lively fourth, complete with a three of her own, but it wasn’t enough as Warren fell by the final of 59-14.

The Lady Jacks move to 0-1 on the year but have a chance to bounce back quickly Saturday afternoon as they face Dermott in the same Mini State Classics Tournament at Drew Central at 3:00 p.m. CST. Saline River Chronicle will have full coverage once again of that game Saturday evening.
