Mattie Bell Wimbley Orr, 1929-2022

Mattie Bell Wimbley Orr, 93, of Wilmar, passed away December 28, 2022. Born January 13, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Hattie Thomas Wimbley. She grew up in Wilmar, attending school and church.

Mattie lived in both Stuttgart, AR and Detroit, MI. with two of her older siblings after she graduated high school. In 1951, she married Curley Orr and they moved to Chicago, IL., where she worked as a seamstress for
ACME Button Company until retirement. She lived in Chicago for 58 years. She moved back to Wilmar after the passing of her husband Curley in 2009.

Mattie was a member of St. Joseph’s Baptist Church in Chicago and served on the Shepherd Staff and with her return to Wilmar she reunited with the Greater Shady Grove AME Church. She was a member of the Lucy Walker Missionary Society, East Arkansas Conference, Layman Organization and a member of the Drew County Branch of NAACP #6042.

Mattie was also preceded in death by her siblings, Bill, Curtis, MC, Johnny Lee, James, Ethel, Clovis; her twin Hattie; her son, Curley Eugene Orr.

She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Anderson Orr, Angela ‘Mamie’ Jones (Joe) both of Wilmar; daughter-in-law, Laurel Shipp Orr; grandchildren, Gwinnett Orr, Rochelle Jones, Felicia Jones, Yolanda Dillard (Reginald), Denise Moore (Corey), Jennifer Jones, Kenneth Shipp (Alana), Solomon Eugene Orr, Alexus Orr; great-grandchildren, April Jones, Nayome Shipp, Darius Shipp, Chase Dillard; her Greater Shady Grove AMEC family; a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was held January 7 at Greater Shady Grove AME Church in Wilmar with Rev. Marvin Mosby pastor and Rev. Elmo Shorter Jr. eulogist. Burial was in Wilmar Cemetery, Wilmar. Arrangements by Hammons Funeral Home.
