James Elester ‘Tank’ Green, 1945-2023

James Elester ‘Tank’ Green, 77, of Johnsville, passed away February 22, 2023. Born on July 29, 1945, he was a son of the late Jasper and Avery Green. He confessed his faith at an early age by becoming a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

After receiving his education, he went to work at Potlatch in Warren, AR. In searching for better opportunities, he moved to St. Louis, MO. This is where he met and married the love of his life Joyce Ray, on March 29, 1969.

To this union three children were born.

James began his 30-year tenure at General Motors upon moving to St. Louis. James’ father Jasper was noted for saying “My boys can do anything.” James proved this to be true by using his exceptional skills and knowledge to excel at General Motors. Often surpassing some of the highest degrees in the field.

After retirement, James decided to move back home to Johnsville. He had a great love for hunting, fishing and farming. “He had the Midas touch.” Everything he cultivated turned to gold. He was a cherished member of Hampton/Trotter Hunting Club. James rededicated his life back to Christ and reunited with Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James Carroll, where he was ordained as a Deacon. James served the Lord in many capacities whether in the church or the community, until his health failed.

He was also preceded in death by three siblings, Willie Fred, Robert Green and Rosie Green.

James is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 54 years, Joyce Green; his children, Craig Green (Arlesia) of Monticello, James Green Jr. (Angelica) of Monroe, LA., Daphne Green of St. Louis, MO.; siblings, Daisy Fletcher of Dayton, OH., Beverly Marshall (Tony) of Warren, Charles Green of Johnsville; in-laws, Robbie Green of Warren, Nancy Green of Monticello, Laverne Hampton of Little Rock, Dennis Wayne, Herman, Fermit, Nathaniel, James Darnell Ray all of Brenham, TX.; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was held March 5 at Hampton Chapel AME Church in Johnsville. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, Johnsville. Arrangements by Hammons Funeral Home.
