Lumberjacks take down McGehee 13-3 in nonconference action

WARREN, Ark. – The Warren Lumberjacks baseball team received a complete game from Layton Wolfe on the mound and recorded 10 hits in a 13-3 run-rule win over McGehee in a nonconference matchup Monday evening at the Warren Sports Complex.

Warren (6-4) hadn’t played a game since March 31, but showed little rust in disposing of the Owls (2-9). The Jacks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning with the first two runs scoring on a pair of sacrifice flies by Delfino Rivera and Bryson Harris. Antonio Jordan walked with the bases loaded to plate another and Landon Wolfe scored on a passed ball. Freshman Ren Reep capped the scoring with a two-run line drive to left field after a pitching change.

This Lumberjack Baseball game report is brought to you by:

Maddox Lassiter hit a one-out single to begin the bottom of the third for the Orange and Black and stole second and third base. Landon Wolfe walked with two outs to set the scene for Harris who hit a rocket to the right-center gap for a two-run double to make the score 8-0. Ervin Rivera singled home Harris to give Warren a 9-0 advantage.

The Owls scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout. However, Warren struck back with four in the bottom half to move in front 13-1. Lassiter scored on a wild pitch to begin the scoring for the inning with Jordan smacking a two-run single to right field to extend the lead further. Reep again finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Warren’s final run.

McGehee started the fifth frame with a single and the second batter hit a line drive right by Lassiter at third base. The runner thought Lassiter had caught the ball and retreated to first before realizing it was in the outfield. Landon Wolfe fielded it and threw a strike to second base to force out the runner. The Owls did pick up two runs in the inning to make the score 13-3 with two outs. However, a foul out to first baseman Delfino Rivera clinched the run-rule win for the Jacks.

Among a number of strong candidates for the Greg Harton Shelter Insurance Player of the Game, the nod went to Lassiter. The senior third baseman went 3-for-3 at the plate, scored three runs, and stole four bases.

Layton Wolfe tossed a complete game for the home team. The junior hurler allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Offensively, Harris, Jordan, and Reep all drove in three runs apiece with the Rivera brothers registering an RBI each. Harris and Landon Wolfe each scored two times as the Jacks outhit McGehee 10-6.

The Lumberjacks remain at home for a crucial 4A-8 Conference matchup against Stuttgart tomorrow. First pitch versus the Ricebirds is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Warren Sports Complex.
