Rosalynda Ellis named new Brunson Elementary principal

Rosalynda Ellis was named the new Brunson Elementary principal Monday night by Warren School Board.

She will replace Regina Scroggins, who is retiring at the end of the school year. Scroggins has spent 37 years in education, including 31 years in Warren School District. Ellis is currently the Hermitage Elementary principal.

Also at the board meeting, a memorandum of understanding between the district and Mainline Health Systems was approved to establish a school-based medical clinic on the school campus. The clinic will provide mental, medical and dental services to students. There was one abstention on the vote, Dr. Kerry Pennington.

Superintendent Bryan Cornish gave a report on ongoing construction. He said the new Warren Elementary School is undergoing a final cleaning. The state fire marshal and state heating, ventilation and air conditioning inspector will make inspections and the building should be turned over to the district next week. A motion was approved to spend $46,100 for markerboards for the school.

Lumberjack Arena is working on installing a lift. A cleaning crew will come in to make final operations.

Warren High School will have temporary air-conditioning unit used to allow tiling to be laid by the end of the month. Some ceiling work remains and exterior work and landscaping will be completed. The building should be ready for occupation shortly before the beginning of the school year in August.

In other action:

  • Linda Harton’s retirement was accepted. She spent a total of 39 years in education and was an instructional facilitator at Eastside Elementary.

Certified resignations included Miranda Eubanks, fourth-grade science instructor at Brunson; Tristan McMahan, Warren Middle School counselor; Andrew Saunders, WMS ALE, assistant baseball, assistant WHS football and assistant Junior High football coach; Tina Anthony, WMS seventh-grade literacy instructor; Joanna Young, WHS Beta Club sponsor; Kevin Dunn, WHS music instructor and band director; Clark Watkins, WHS football defensive coordinator and ALE instructor; and Candace Cox, WHS art instructor.

Classified resignations included Kabrina Tenner, food service worker, and Chanel Hooper, WMS paraprofessional.

Hired were Tina Anthony, WMS sixth-grade literacy instructor; Clark Watkins, WHS dean of students; Matthew Gonzalez, WHS football defensive coordinator, assistant baseball coach and WHS ALE instructor; and Jamie Palmer, WHS science instructor.

  • A resolution was approved naming Cornish as Warren’s representative on the South East Arkansas Educational Cooperative board.
  • Approval was given to the administrators salary schedule, classified salary schedules (increased by $1 per step) and the special education budget.
  • A dedication ceremony of an Axley Field replicate goal post which will be placed on the new soccer field was approved.
  • In minute messages, Eastside Elementary Principal Sara Weaver said all state testing was completed. Third-grade students will tour Brunson Elementary on May 10. A Book Fair will be held May 15-24. JACKS behavior celebration will be May 17. Perfect attendance celebration will be May 18. A testing celebration will be May 19 and end of the year awards will be presented May 22-23.
  • Scroggins said Brunson students completed state testing and I-Ready diagnostic testing.

May 8-12 will be celebrated at Teacher Appreciation Week. On May 12, an ACT Aspire-Ready celebration will be held. On May 19, students will go to FunTrackers Park in Hot Springs. Brunson Red Carpet Awards will be presented on May 24.

  • WMS Principal Kathy Cornish said a field day will be held May 12. Field trips will be held on May 15, 16 and 18. An awards ceremony will be held May 22.
  • WHS Principal Tiffany Gathen said a Renaissance Award Day was held for students with a 3.0 GPA given certificates and a trip to the Bradley County Park. Six students will compete in the Meet Of Champs track meet in Russellville on Wednesday. Boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will compete in the state meet in Bauxite on Thursday. May 16 will be the Senior Awards Assembly. On May 18, 104 students will graduate.
  • SEACBEC Director Devin McDiarmid said 31 students competed at the Arkansas SkillsUSA state competition, with the Criminal Justice Crime Scene Investigation Team placing second and 22 students placing in the top 10 in the state.

A Career Fair Expo was held on April 20. WHS seniors went on a field trip to downtown businesses. Six WHS seniors received pre-apprenticeship certificates. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission representatives came to ABC and built bird feeders. Preschool students participated in the Coins For Cancer and annual Trike-A-Thon to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
