City of Warren taking steps to control garbage disposal costs amid escalating landfill expenses

The following is a press release from the City of Warren:

The City of Warren is working to keep the cost of garbage disposal from continuing to escalate. Our collection system continues to function cost effectively and well managed by hard-working employees. The growing expense is the result of the cost to landfill garbage. All Class I garbage, both household and commercial, is sent to a private landfill and while the cost keeps going up, it is still less expensive than owning and operating a city facility.

At this time, city officials are taking the following actions:

  1. Trying to cut back on the number of large red or brown containers being utilized by businesses, in order to stop illegal dumping into the containers. We are having improper class IV debris dumped into the containers and regular garbage from people who do not live in the city limits, who do not pay a city garbage fee. Remember, the containers are assigned to individual businesses who pay commercial rates to use them.
  2. Working with a waste to energy project to be located in Chicot County which will take all garbage to burn as fuel to generate electricity. If successful, this will cut our disposal cost in half.
  3. Looking to expand our recycling program to decrease the tons of garbage the city must dispose of. This will save money.
