Northeast Arkansas ground shakes Wednesday

JONESBORO, Ark. – On Wednesday morning, residents across northeast Arkansas experienced an unexpected shake as a minor earthquake struck the region.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a preliminary magnitude 3.6 earthquake at 11:46 a.m. on December 27, centered 3.5 miles northeast of Etowah. According to the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of 11 km, approximately 7 miles beneath the Earth’s surface. It’s important to note that the recorded measurement is considered preliminary and may be subject to change pending further analysis.

The seismic event caught the attention of locals as reports flooded in about the ground shaking in various areas. Although the quake’s magnitude falls into the minor category, it was significant enough to be noticed by residents across the region.

As of 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, the Mississippi County Office of Emergency Management confirmed that there were no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. Emergency response teams remain vigilant, monitoring the situation and ensuring the safety of the community.
