Fentanyl conference held SEACBEC addresses growing issue

WARREN, Ark. – On Thursday, the Southeast Arkansas Community Based Education Center (SEACBEC) hosted a crucial conference addressing the escalating fentanyl crisis gripping the region. Prominent figures from various sectors converged to shed light on the multifaceted challenges posed by the potent synthetic opioid.

The conference witnessed the presence of esteemed individuals including Dr. Cherl May, Director of the Criminal Justice Institute, who delivered insights into the expansive nature of the fentanyl problem. Joining her were Sydney Lewis of AFMC Program Evaluation, Jamal Williams from the Arkansas Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Adult and Behavioral Health Services, Ron Worbington representing the Arkansas Rural Health Partnership as a Peer Support Specialist, and James Slaughter, Investigator from the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force.

Kicking off the event, Warren Mayor Gregg Reep extended a warm welcome to participants, underscoring the urgency of collective action in combating the fentanyl scourge.

The conference featured comprehensive presentations aimed at illuminating the local impact of fentanyl abuse. Sydney Lewis presented compelling data illustrating the prevalence and trends of fentanyl misuse. James Slaughter followed with a sobering account of the extent of the crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures.

Highlighting prevention strategies, Kendon Gray, Regional Prevention Representative of Crowley’s Ridge Development Council, outlined ongoing efforts and potential interventions to curb the spread of fentanyl-related harm.

A pivotal aspect of the conference was the engaging roundtable discussion, which provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas and explore viable solutions. Participants deliberated on collaborative approaches involving education, law enforcement initiatives, and community engagement to address the crisis comprehensively.
