Late rally comes up just short for Jacks vs. Magnolia; looking ahead to State Tournament

NASHVILLE, Ark. – After a valiant comeback effort, the Warren Lumberjack Basketball team fell to the Magnolia Panthers by the score of 63-59 in the round 3 consolation game of the 4A South Regional Basketball Tournament Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Arkansas.

1st Quarter

Both teams struggled in the opening couple of minutes to find a basket. Warren got a couple of really good looks, but the shots wouldn’t fall. The Jacks did take a 2-0 lead after Tramond Miller connected with Antonio Jordan in transition near the 5-minute mark of the first. Miller drained a three from distance just a possession later. He would add another long-range three and a layup before the quarter buzzer sounded. Warren trailed 16-13 at the end of the first.

2nd Quarter

Miller knocked down his third three of the ballgame with 5:45 to go in the second, but Magnolia’s tempo was ratcheted up a few notches in the minutes that followed. With 1:30 to go before the half, the Panthers had opened a 10-point lead. Warren’s David Jordan added Warren’s only other basket from the field of the second quarter late on. Magnolia led the Jacks 31-19 at the half.

3rd Quarter

David Jordan scored to open the third-period points tally for the orange and black courtesy of an assist from Antonio Jordan. AJ would make a huge block at the other end, but the Jacks struggled to handle the pressure of Magnolia’s defense, which led to a few turnovers. The Jacks continued to battle, but shots weren’t falling kindly. After a brief breather, Miller came back on to provide a layup that started what was quite a comeback for Warren. He added another transition layup at the 1:30 mark of the third in traffic to cut Magnolia’s lead to 49-36 at the end of the period.

4th Quarter

The Lumberjacks dominated the fourth. A renewed sense of urgency led to a Warren run that gave a real scare to the one-seed Panthers. Antonio Jordan contributed a basket, drew the foul, and converted the free throw to cut the lead to 49-41 with 6:40 to go. Miller got back in on the action and sank his fourth three of the game just seconds later. He added another layup at the 4:15 mark to cut the Magnolia lead further to 53-48. Colton Steen came off the bench to provide some valuable minutes and tough defense. Antonio Jordan attacked the basket for a layup to bring Warren to within two of Magnolia at 58-56. However, that’s as close as the Jacks would come. Miller hit another three with under a minute to go, but Magnolia converted the necessary free throws to see out the win over Warren by the final of 63-59.

Coach Corey Muldrew’s Postgame Comments

Talking exclusively to Saline River Chronicle following the game, Warren Coach Corey Muldrew applauded his team’s resilience in the later stages. “We showed some toughness and togetherness,” he said. “When we play together and connected good results usually follow.

Muldrew was also at the helm of Warren’s Basketball program the last time the orange and black made a State Tournament over five years ago. He noted that “punching a state ticket is hard.” He said he had a chat with the team several weeks ago and told them the tools were in place for them to be successful. “We have everything we need,” he stated. A “new arena, fan support, and talent.”

Warren’s overall record falls to 13-6. The Jacks now get a much-deserved couple of days off before a trip to North Arkansas to face the second seed from the 4A North Regional Tournament, Subiaco Academy, Tuesday, February 27, at 8:30 p.m. on the campus of Farmington High near Fayetteville.
