Three Jacks score in season opening comeback win vs. Lisa Academy North

WARREN, Ark. – In a thrilling and highly competitive opening game of the 2024 soccer season, the Warren Lumberjacks clashed with Lisa Academy North Jaguars at the Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium. Warren ultimately emerging victorious from the non-conference clash with a 3-1 win over their opponents from the 3A East Conference.

From the outset, Lisa Academy North Jaguars displayed early intent, pressing forward, albeit without significant penetration into the Warren box. However, in the 4th minute, Warren’s goalkeeper, Jessie Cortes, was called into action, making an impressive save from a long-range shot by Lisa Academy. The momentum swung both ways, with Warren’s Alann Juarez attempting a header from a corner in the 6th minute, only to be denied by the Lisa Academy keeper.

The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute when Lisa Academy capitalized on a free-kick opportunity from 35 yards out. Despite Cortes’ initial deflection, the Jaguar’s right-winger seized the rebound, putting Lisa Academy ahead 1-0. Warren fought back valiantly, with Alan Juarez and Oliver Chavez-Mata narrowly missing chances. Just before the halftime whistle, in the 36th minute, Warren’s Alex Bartolo slotted home a low shot off an indirect free kick in the box to equalize for the Jacks at 1-1.

The second half witnessed a resurgence from Warren, as they began to assert control over the game. The Lumberjacks continued to gain fire away, with Aaron Romero showcasing individual brilliance in the 67th minute, sprinting down the left wing before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner to give Warren a 2-1 lead.

The momentum firmly in their favor, Warren extended their lead in the 72nd minute with Jacarlos Marquis capitalizing on a free-kick delivery to put his side up 3-1. Throughout the match, midfielder Aristio James impressed with his assertive presence in the midfield, contributing significantly to Warren’s control of the game.

In the post-game comments, Head Lumberjack Coach Shaun Wilson expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of effort and determination. “I tell them(the team) all the time that zero effort produced zero results. I saw their effort tonight and I am proud of them.” Wilson’s encouragement echoed through the team, setting a high standard for the remainder of the season and establishing Warren as the “Fightin’ Lumberjacks.”

With a resounding victory to kick off their campaign, Warren Lumberjacks have set the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead. The Jacks will hit the road to face Hope Friday, March 1.
