Warren Aviation Commission meets to discuss maintenance and more at WMA

WARREN, Ark. – The Warren Aviation Commission convened in the Municipal Courtroom on Thursday, February 15, 2024, to discuss various matters pertaining to the local airport’s operations and infrastructure. Chaired by Commissioner Joe Wharton, the meeting saw the attendance of Commissioners Rick Stracner, Bryan Martin, and Vernon Colvin, alongside several officials from the City including Warren Mayor Gregg Reep. Commissioner Rob Reep was absent due to a work conflict. He was briefed on the contents of the meeting.

The meeting commenced with routine procedures, including the approval of minutes from a previous session. Building Official Rob Johnson gave updates that all repairs needed have been conducted.

One of the notable topics addressed was the endeavor to attract aircraft to locate in Warren. Commissioners unanimously agreed to task Mayor Gregg Reep with reaching out to other airport managers in the region to explore the possibility of advertising in their local newspapers or online platforms. The aim is to tap into potential opportunities, especially in neighboring towns like Monticello, Pine Bluff, Fordyce, Crossett, Dermott, and McGhee who may have an overflow of aircraft stationed.

Maintenance reports presented by Sanitation/Building Code Manager Rob Johnson highlighted the completion of necessary repairs across the airport premises. Furthermore, issues such as storage arrangements in rental hangars, airport signage updates pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the resolution of flooding problems on the runway and a culvert on an Arkansas state highway were thoroughly discussed and addressed.

A new sign is being discussed for the facility, and the group unanimously chose the below design.

A significant decision emerged regarding the installation of a cover on the fuel pump. Commissioners unanimously voted to solicit bids for a lean tube type cover, angled off to the North, subject to approval by the City Council.

Moreover, updates on the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system repair indicated successful resolution, signaling positive strides in ensuring operational readiness and safety measures at the airport.

As the meeting drew to a close, Commissioner Rick Stracner motioned for adjournment, a move seconded by Commissioner Vernon Colvin, thus bringing the session to an end.
