Cemeteries of Southeast Arkansas: Unveiling the rich history of early black communities

MONTICELLO, Ark. – On Saturday, March 30, a unique and enlightening event will take place at the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s University Center, Caucus Room. Hosted by the Arkansas Archaeological Survey-UAM Research Station, this event promises to delve into the deep-rooted history of early Black communities through the lens of their cemeteries.

The event, titled “Cemeteries of Southeast Arkansas: Revealing the History of Early Black Communities,” will kick off at 10 AM and continue until 12 PM with a series of presentations by esteemed speakers from the Preservation of African American Cemeteries (PAAC) and the Arkansas Archaeological Survey (ARAS).

The morning session will feature two compelling presentations:

  1. “Building Family and Community Histories Through Local Cemeteries” by Tamela Tenpenny-Lewis (PAAC)
  2. “Fraternal Headstones & Archaeology” by Dr. Matthew P. Rooney (ARAS & PAAC)

Following the morning sessions, attendees are invited to a help with a hands-on headstone cleaning and an Easter Egg Hunt at the Campground/Mt. Pleasant Cemetery located at 194 Campground Rd., Monticello, AR 71655. The afternoon activities will commence from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, providing participants with a unique opportunity to engage in preservation efforts while enjoying a festive Easter celebration.
