City of Warren launches effort to improve high-speed internet access

WARREN, Ark. – The City of Warren has embarked on a mission to enhance access to true high-speed internet, through means such as fiber-optic technology, for both residents and businesses within the community. Recognizing the current limitations and challenges faced by many in accessing affordable and reliable high-speed internet, the city is seeking the support and participation of the community to achieve this goal.

At present, fiber-optic installation remains financially out of reach for many businesses and homes in Warren, with many lacking access to the superior high-speed connectivity it offers. While Internet Service Providers (ISPs) often classify locations in Warren as having “good internet,” the reality, as confirmed by our own experience here at Saline River Chronicle, paints a different picture. Numerous instances of subpar internet speeds and the prohibitive costs associated with fiber-optic installation slow not only many businesses tasks throughout a day for those based in Warren, but also disrupt the quality of basic television and streaming services for many residents throughout the community.

In response to these challenges, the City of Warren is actively pursuing avenues to secure grant funding that would facilitate the expansion of high-speed fiber-optic internet not only for businesses but also for residents across Warren. However, the challenge requires that residents and businesses participate in a community-wide survey to test the true internet speeds being delivered to customers.

The challenge requires participants to conduct three speed tests using a device connected to their home or business WiFi, submit the results via email to warrenarsbc@gmail.com, and potentially repeat the test on different days if deemed underserved.

  1. Using a device connected to your home or business WiFi.
  2. Go to broadband.arkansas.gov.
  3. Scroll down to speed test.
  4. Perform the test and take a screenshot of the results.
  5. If deemed underserved, repeat steps 2-4 on different days (a total of three tests).
  6. Email the three speed test results to warrenarsbc@gmail.com.
  7. For questions or assistance, call (870) 226-5860.

By taking part, residents and businesses could help the City move forward in seeking grant funding to make higher-speed internet available in Warren.

Mayor Reep stated, “The City of Warren wants to ensure that anyone wants and is willing to subscribe to the highest-grade internet available has access to do so.” He encouraged residents to take part in the initiative, underscoring the significance of accurate data in driving efforts to enhance high-speed internet accessibility in Warren.

There is a crucial deadline of April 12 to participate.

For further information or assistance with the speed test challenge, residents can contact the City of Warren at (870) 226-5860.
