Mondragon and Villeda’s second half goals help secure a huge comeback win for Lady Jacks over Star City

STAR CITY, Ark. – In a thrilling 4A East Conference showdown on Thursday, March 28, 2024, the Warren Lady Jacks clashed with the Star City Lady Bulldogs on the road at Star City.

The Lady Jacks entered the game with a determined mindset, seeking redemption after a tough start in the conference with a 0-1 record and an overall 1-4 standing. From the opening minutes, Warren showed intent with early offensive pressure, looking to capitalize on any opportunities presented.

The action kicked off in the 3rd minute when a mistake by the Star City goalkeeper provided Warren with a chance, but they were unable to convert as the ball eluded their reach. Despite the setback, Warren continued to press forward, with players like Allison Mondragon and Jennifer Carpenter posing constant threats to the Star City defense.

However, it was Star City who struck first, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Warren in the 9th minute to find the back of the net with a low effort that nestled into the far corner, putting them ahead 1-0. Undeterred, Warren persisted with their attacking mindset, creating several scoring opportunities throughout the first half.

Delaney Herring had a chance in the 20th minute, only to see her shot saved, while Mondragon’s skillful play in the 24th minute forced another save from the Star City goalkeeper. Ashley Rodriguez also contributed with a promising run down the wing, although the final pass was intercepted.

As the first half concluded, Star City held a narrow 1-0 lead, setting the stage for a dramatic second half. Warren came out firing on all cylinders, and their efforts paid off in the 50th minute when Jennifer Carpenter’s persistence led to a goal-scoring opportunity for Mondragon. From 40 yards out, Mondragon unleashed a looping shot that sailed over the goalkeeper’s head, leveling the score at 1-1.

Warren’s momentum continued as Sarah Villeda capitalized on a scrappy shot from a corner in the 60th minute, putting her team ahead 2-1. The match remained intense, with Warren goalkeeper Allie Adair making crucial saves, including a pivotal one in the 73rd minute to preserve the lead.

In the end, Warren emerged victorious with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Star City, improving their conference record to 1-1 and their overall standing to 2-4. With their sights set on further success, Warren Lady Jacks will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming clash against Little Rock-Mills on April 2.
