BCMC Board holds March meeting

WARREN, Ark. – The Bradley County Medical Center Board of Directors met for its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 28 in the BCMC Conference Room. Items on the docket included financial reports, executive updates, policy approvals, and an update on the recent Arkansas Department of Health survey.

The agenda began with unanimous approval of the previous minutes from the Feb. 29 meeting. Controller Matt Pace began his report by stating that surgeries and occupational therapy treatments were up. He then reported the hospital had a gross patient revenue of $3,395,907, while the net operating revenue stood at $1,458,031 for the month of February. The hospital recorded a net income of $465,309. Sales tax collected was more than $125,000 to bring the total in the sales tax fun to more than $4.4 million.

CEO/CFO Leslie Huitt began her report by letting the board know the year-to-date volumes appear to be trending down apart from surgery, emergency room visits, and senior care. However, volumes are up in most areas compared to this time last year except acute care and swing bed. Revenue was down for February, but this was partly due to having a couple of less days in the month. Huitt reported that volume wasn’t low for the month, but January had extremely high volumes.

Huitt also spoke about the progress being made in MEDITECH for financials. There has been a lot of progress, but still more to be done. She said that she has received positive feedback from some physicians on it being easier to complete charts. Later in the meeting, she showed the board some of the reports in MEDITECH so they could see the amount of financial information available within the system.

Chief Operating Officer Leeanna Williams informed the board about the Community Priority Action Planning meeting on April 16 through the DRCHSD Grant and there will be a Diabetes Education Workshop on Tuesdays, starting April 2, at the Brunson Medical Complex in conjunction with the Arkansas Rural Health Partnership.

The next update came from Chief Nursing Officer Jamie Wolfe as he spoke about the upcoming M*A*S*H Camp. The camp will be a week long this summer from June 24-28 for high schoolers. More information will be available at a later date. There will be a hospital booth and stroke information at the Hogskin Holidays in Hampton on April 12. Wolfe concluded with a little information about MEDITECH. Post-live optimization is underway now with some MEDITECH staff on site this week and positive changes had been made.

Williams took the floor again for policy approvals. Annual approvals for CURA Hospitality (BCMC’s dietary vendor), Infection Prevention, and Environmental Services were passed unanimously by the board. Additionally, the Quality Improvement Plan for 2024 was approved by a unanimous vote.

Huitt touched on the recent survey from the Arkansas Department of Health, which took place at the beginning of the month. BCMC was told it would be 10 business days to get the full report, but they have informed her they are running behind, so it is not in hand yet. There will be a deeper dive into the results once the hospital has it.

The board approved the use of sales tax funds to cover the cost of an air conditioning unit in the surgery department and a new contract with Arkansas Fire and Protection for the Kids First building and Brunson Medical Complex. The meeting then went into executive session.

Out of executive session, the board unanimously approved to proceed to the next phase of master planning which will be the schematic design phase. The meeting was then adjourned.
