Jacks secure hard-fought road win in conference opener at Monticello

In a nail-biting clash that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Warren Lumberjack Men’s Basketball team secured a hard-fought 58-56 victory over Monticello in the opening game of the 8-4A Conference season, Wednesday night, January 3, 2024. The showdown took place on the road at Monticello marking a stellar start to the new year for the Lumberjacks.

Despite the close margin, the Lumberjacks emerged triumphant, clinching a crucial win in a contest where every point mattered.

Warren entered the game with a 1-1 record for the season, having enjoyed a well-deserved break during the Christmas period. The team’s resilience and determination were on full display throughout the matchup, making it evident that they were eager to kick off the conference season with a statement victory.

1st Quarter: The first quarter set the tone for the evening as Tramond Miller ignited the scoring with two consecutive three-pointers. Miller’s impressive performance contributed 10 points in the opening quarter alone, helping Warren take a narrow 14-13 lead.

2nd Quarter: As the game progressed, Antonio Jordan stepped up for the Lumberjacks, showcasing his skills with a three-pointer and adding six more points to his tally in the second quarter. However, Monticello managed to claw back, seizing a 27-25 lead at halftime in what turned out to be a tightly contested affair.

3rd Quarter: The third quarter continued the intense battle, with both teams fighting for control. Cody Weatherspoon’s crucial three-pointer played a pivotal role, helping Warren secure a slim 42-41 lead heading into the final quarter.

4th Quarter: The fourth quarter was nothing short of a thriller. With under two minutes remaining, Warren held a precarious 50-48 lead. Late fouls added tension to the game, but a pivotal play by Antonio Jordan to Tramond Miller proved decisive. Miller’s clutch shot, free throw, and a missed last-second attempt by Monticello sealed the 58-56 victory for Warren.

After the game, Head Lumberjack Coach Joseph Anders emphasized the significance of the win, stating, “Any win in Monticello is a good night.” He highlighted the importance of timely shooting and defensive stops. “We’re still working to find team chemistry and consistency of effort, but one day at time,” said Anders.
