Chavez’s first half penalty earns Lumberjacks crucial win at Star City

In their second 4A East Conference match of the season on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Star City, Arkansas, the Warren Lumberjacks faced off against the Star City Bulldogs in a highly anticipated soccer match.

The Lumberjacks entered the game with a strong 1-0 record in the 4A East Conference and a 2-3 overall standing, aiming to extend their winning streak and solidify their position in the conference.

The first half saw an intense battle unfold in the midfield, with both teams vying for control. Star City managed a couple of half chances within the opening 15 minutes, testing Warren’s defense early on. However, Warren’s goalkeeper, Jessie Cortes, played flawlessly with a phenomenal save in the 23rd minute, denying Star City a clear scoring opportunity. Cortes continued to shine, making an outstanding save in the 27th minute by tipping a dangerous shot over the bar.

As the half progressed, Warren intensified their offensive efforts, leading to a pivotal moment in the 35th minute. Oliver Chavez-Mata delivered a precise cross from the right wing, aiming for Jose Valez in the box. Valez was brought down, resulting in a penalty kick for Warren. Chavez-Mata calmly stepped up and converted the penalty, giving Warren a crucial 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Star City ramping up their pressure, seeking an equalizer. Warren’s defense held firm, with Cortes once again coming up with crucial saves, notably in the 50th and 67th minutes, thwarting Star City’s attacking attempts.

Despite Star City’s late surge and Warren’s threat on the counterattack, the game remained tense until the final whistle. In the end, Warren emerged victorious with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Star City.

With this result, Warren improved to an impressive 2-0 in the 4A East Conference and 3-3 overall, solidifying their position as a formidable force in the conference. The Jacks will be back in action April 2 at home for their home opening conference match vs. Little Rock-Mills.
